Curriculum
Prevalentemente autodidatta, ha conseguito il diploma di strumentazione per banda presso il Conservatorio di Verona, ha frequentato i seminari estivi "Siena jazz", studiando pianoforte con Franco D'Andrea, arrangiamento e composizione con G. Gazzani e B. Tommaso.
Sue composizioni per banda e per orchestra jazz hanno ottenuto premi in vari concorsi internazionali.
Tra il 1990 e il 2000 ha collaborato con l'"Ensemble Mobile", orchestra jazz della Jam-Associazione Musicisti di Bergamo, per la quale ha realizzato un gran numero di arrangiamenti e composizioni originali.
Collabora da anni con il sassofonista Tino Tracanna nella realizzazione di progetti "di confine" tra jazz e musica colta europea, tra cui ”Affinità elettive”, con quartetto jazz e orchestra da camera e “Gesualdo” su madrigali di Gesualdo da Venosa.
Ha realizzato arrangiamenti in vari progetti orchestrali con Gianluigi Trovesi, tra cui il cd “Dedalo”, premiato nel 2002 con il German Critics Award per la categoria Best Jazz Album Of The Year. Con il pianista Franco D’Andrea ha realizzato un “Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra jazz”.
Nel 2006 ha fatto parte della giuria del “Brussels Jazz Orchestra International Composition Contest”.
Ha collaborato con l’Orchestra Nazionale Jazz, la Civica Jazz Band di Milano, l’Orchestra “Enea Salmeggia” di Nembro (Bg), la Big Band Mousikè di Gazzaniga (Bg), la WDR Big Band di Colonia, la Blast Unit Orchestra di Milano, l’Orchestra Sinfonica di Bari.
Come pianista è leader di un quartetto.
È stato docente di jazz ai conservatori di Parma e Venezia; ha insegnato strumentazione per banda nei conservatori di Avellino, Bologna, Monopoli. Ha svolto varia attività didattica inerente al jazz a Brescia, Bergamo, Venezia, Modena, Milano. Presso il Conservatorio di Milano tiene dal 2004 corsi di arrangiamento e orchestrazione nell’ambito dei corsi sperimentali jazz. Attualmente insegna jazz al conservatorio di Brescia. E’ inoltre docente di musica d’insieme presso i seminari “Nuoro Jazz”, diretti da Paolo Fresu.

He was born in Messina in 1957 and has lived in Brescia since 1974.
Prevalently autodidact, he took the Band Instrumentation diploma at Verona Conservatory. He attended "Siena jazz" summer seminars, playing the piano with Franco D'Andrea and studying arrangement and composition with G.Gazzani and B.Tommaso.
He started his professional activity in 1984, working with the Theatre Company CTL in Brescia, as piano player and composer of scene music. At the same time he dedicated his activity to jazz and band music as a conductor and composer.
His compositions were given a prize at the International musical contest of arrangement and jazz composition in Barga (1988 and 1990) and at the band musical contest in Corciano (1992).
Since 1990 he has permanently collaborated as composer-arranger with the "Ensemble mobile", the jazz orchestra of Jam - Associazione Musicisti in Bergamo. For this orchestra he wrote several arrangements and original compositions, e.g. a soundtrack for A.Hitchcock's film "The lodger" (jazz festival in Bergamo, Bologna and Clusone) and the project "Chasin' the trane", on John Coltrane's music (Sassari 1997, Bergamo 1997, Chieti 1998).
In 1999 he became artistic director of the "Ensemble mobile" and he conducted the orchestra in the project "Ellington in three colours" performed during "Bergamo jazz festival 1999". He also realised, in collaboration with the piano player Franco D'Andrea, a "Concerto for piano and jazz orchestra", first performed in July 1999 during the same festival. With the same orchestra realised the project "Ens. Mobile meets John Zorn's music", performed during "Bergamo Jazz 2000".
He has collaborated for years with the saxophonist Tino Tracanna, on the realization of projects at the limit between jazz and music of the European cultured tradition: in 1995 "Affinità elettive", concert for jazz quartet and chamber orchestra, recorded in the homonymous CD and presented at the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo, during Bergamo jazz 1996; in 1997 "Gesualdo" for voice, jazz quartet, classical quartet and percussion. It is a project composed of an elaboration from five Gesualdo da Venosa's madrigals and original compositions, recorded in the homonymous CD edited by Splas(h). In 1999 "Gesualdo" was also performed during the XII International festival "Time in jazz" in Berchidda; in 2000 at "V Festival Musicale Castel Gavarno" and at "Iseo Jazz".
In 2001 he has collaborated with Gianluigi Trovesi on the realization of "Dedalo" project, with the WDR Big Band of Köln, guest Markus Stockhausen and Tom Rainey. "Dedalo", published by Enja, wins in 2002 the "German Critics Award" as Best Jazz Album Of The Year, referendum among the best German critics.
Since 1995 he has been the leader of a jazz quintet and quartet (and duo). With the quintet, he realised the performance "Cucine", in collaboration with the dancer and choreographer Eugenio De Mello, presented in the 2nd Dance Festival in Brescia.
In 1995/1996 he taught jazz music at the Conservatoire in Parma; from 1997 to 2001 he taught Band Instrumentation at the Conservatoire in Avellino, Bologna and Monopoli. In the last years, he has carried out a programme of didactic activity concerning jazz music in Brescia, Bergamo, Milan.
At present he taught jazz music at the Conservatoire in Venezia and is the director of the jazz courses at the "Scuola di armonia H.Strickler" in Rovato, where he teaches piano jazz, harmony and jazz composition, ensemble music.
